Globalization
Baseline

(De-risking) Introduction, Globalization & De-risking

Core mission today: set the baseline for IB analysis, understand the paradigm shift from “efficiency first” to “security first,” and use Misaeng to decode how multinational operations actually run.

THE SPARK

Research Kick-off

From “Huh?” to “Aha!”

(Cognitive Scaffold)。 This semester doubles as a teaching-practice research project. Treat the class as a lab: we will test how Generative AI (GenAI) can act as your cognitive scaffold.

(Explicit Knowledge)。 The goal is not to outsource thinking. The goal is to use AI to help you convert tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge—structured, defensible, and shareable.

Critical Shift: Efficiency vs. Security

For the last 40 years, textbooks like Hill framed globalization around comparative advantage and efficiency.

(Economic Rationality)。 But the 2026 reality is different: political rationality is overriding economic rationality—security and resilience now compete with pure cost efficiency.

50%?」 Pre-test prompt: “Why is TSMC’s U.S. fab often framed as ‘geopolitical insurance’ even if costs are ~50% higher than in Taiwan?”

THEORY: WORLD-SYSTEMS & HILL

Immanuel Wallerstein’s World-Systems theory adds a structural lens: it explains why “de-risking” is not just a policy slogan, but a predictable response from core powers trying to defend their position.

Hill Chapter 1: Textbook Decoder

(Markets)

Previously separate national markets converge into a single global market, driven by product standardization.

Keywords: Convergence, Standardized Products.
aluminum, crude oil, chips, commercial aircraft.
consumer goods often remain localized (e.g., food).

(Production)

(Location Economies)。 Firms spread their value chain across locations that offer the best combination of costs and capabilities (location economies).

Keywords: Sourcing, Factor Costs.
Boeing 787 components are sourced globally and assembled in Seattle.
over-extended supply chains are fragile; firms explore friend-shoring.

CASE STUDY: MISAENG

Episode 1 of Misaeng is more than a workplace drama—it is an “encoding/decoding” tutorial for international trade and cross-border coordination.

THE ENCODING GAP EPISODE 01

Jang Geu-rae’s pain = The entry barrier

Jang’s early struggles come from not speaking the system’s language. That is IB 101: if you do not understand terminology and process, you cannot participate in global business execution.

The road is open to everyone, but not everyone can walk it.” (Because you don’t know the rules.)

Scene decode: the filing meltdown is a lesson in SOP and taxonomy. MNCs need shared encoding; without it, HQ cannot coordinate with subsidiaries.

(Survival Glossary)

B/L (Bill of Lading)

Bill of Lading. Often serves as a receipt, a contract of carriage, and a document of title. Without the original (or a verified lawful holder), cargo release can be blocked.

L/C (Letter of Credit)

Letter of Credit. A bank’s conditional payment undertaking: pay when documents strictly comply. It solves trust problems by trading “documents” rather than promises.

FOB (Free On Board)

FOB(船上交貨)。 FOB (Free On Board). Seller delivers the goods on board at the named port; risk generally transfers to the buyer from that point. It defines the handoff of risk and cost responsibilities.

Incoterms

Incoterms(國貿條規)。 Incoterms. Standard trade terms (ICC) that clarify delivery obligations, risk transfer, cost allocation, and responsibilities (e.g., FOB, CIF, DDP).

THE INTERN'S CHALLENGE

Now we use AI scaffolding to simulate the work challenges of an intern at One International. Complete the tasks in order.

User: Intern_Jang @ YZU_CM438_Lab

[TASK 1] Flow Redesign (The Flow)

Scenario: Jang messed up the filing. Design a cross-border trade file naming + archiving logic so that HQ (Korea) and a US branch can find the same contract within 3 seconds.

[TASK 2] Reality Check (AI Reality Check)

If “B/L” still feels like boring paperwork, use AI to make it concrete. Find Taiwan-related overseas failures caused by execution issues (process lapses or cultural misreadings)—not strategy mistakes.

"You are a senior international trade specialist. Explain the legal force of a Bill of Lading (B/L). Then give a real or fictional case where mishandling the B/L caused cargo to be stuck at port and incurred massive demurrage charges—so that I, an intern, can instantly grasp why it matters (a B/L isn’t just paper; it’s money)."
"Search for cases in the past 10 years where Taiwanese SMEs or F&B businesses failed in overseas expansion, focusing on execution-level causes such as failure to adapt to local regulations, messy management processes, or poor communication. Provide three specific cases and analyze whether the outcome might differ if handled by someone like Jang Geu-rae (a rule-stickler)."

(Ticket to Leave) Performance Check (Ticket to Leave)

Before you leave, make sure you can answer:

Globalization shift: Why are firms and states moving from “efficiency” toward “security / de-risking”?
Term check: Why is a B/L treated as a document of title, not just a receipt?
(Hint: search cost and cross-time-zone coordination.)
