Cultural Clashes & Ethical Dilemmas: Train AI Empathy
(Hallucination Correction)。 Core mission today: treat culture as an OS-compatibility problem and ethics as a system security layer. You will use Hofstede’s 6 dimensions and Stakeholder/CSR lenses to decode American Factory and Dirty Money: Hard NOx, then run a “TSMC Dresden × IG Metall” townhall negotiation to practice persona adoption and hallucination/stereotype correction.
Upgrade “arguing” into “negotiating”
This week’s skill is Persona Adoption: you will not just ask AI for answers—you will force AI to speak from the counterparty’s cultural logic. The goal is not to “win” a debate; it is to reach a workable agreement.
We also practice Hallucination Correction: when AI slips into stereotypes (“people from X are lazy / sweatshop mentality”), you should catch it and demand a rewrite into verifiable, non-biased claims.
Culture and ethics are not “soft topics.” They are hard risks that can blow up schedules, costs, and reputation.
This week reframes two abstract topics in “engineering language”: culture is an operating system, and ethics is a system security layer. When a firm forces home-country management defaults onto a host-country OS, you get “software incompatibility” crashes; when performance pressure bypasses safety mechanisms, you get systemic failure.
Use Hofstede as a “difference radar”: not to label people, but to generate testable negotiation hypotheses. Click a dimension to load likely faultlines and workable framing.
Hierarchy & authority acceptance.
Individual rights vs group loyalty.
What does “achievement” mean?
Rules, planning, predictability.
Short-term tradeoffs for long-term gain.
Work-life norms and self-control.
The classic failure is not “language,” but decoding: you interpret signals using your own OS and misread value differences as competence defects.
Hill’s warning: unethical behavior is often not about “bad people,” but about unrealistic goals and distorted incentives that make cheating the rational option.
This week uses two “real-world failure logs” rather than a written case. American Factory shows how cultural clashes can turn a factory into a battlefield; Dirty Money: Hard NOx shows how performance pressure can puncture an organization’s ethics system.
The clash is not about “who works harder,” but about different definitions of efficiency: speed/obedience/long hours vs safety/rights/predictable schedules.
Dieselgate is not just an individual moral failure. It is a systemic outcome of leadership style + organizational culture + unrealistic goals: when failure is unacceptable, bad news gets buried, and cheating becomes the “solution.”
If an international manager cannot decode local culture, they get Cao Dewang–style frustration; if they cannot design sane incentives, they create Winterkorn-style fraud.
Scenario (2026): TSMC’s fab in Dresden faces union pressure. IG Metall threatens industrial action unless strict working-time rules and codetermination are respected. Your mission: reach an agreement on a weekend on-call system.
Write your 1-minute opening statement plus 3 red lines. Requirement: explicitly include at least 1 Hofstede dimension (e.g., Uncertainty Avoidance) and explain how it shapes acceptance of a weekend on-call system.
(Hallucination Correction)。 Start with Prompt 1 to generate predicted faultlines and Germany-compatible framing. Then run Prompt 2 for a role-play: you are the TSMC manager, AI is the IG Metall union leader. If AI slips into stereotypes, force a correction (hallucination correction).
Before you leave, make sure you can answer:
Your inputs on this page (negotiation brief, reflection, pasted AI outputs, and an optional evidence file) can be packaged for download and uploaded to the course Google Sheet (the upload endpoint is not displayed on the page).
Tip: this metadata is embedded in your downloaded file and the Google Sheets log for learning analytics.
Google Drive。 Upload a text-based file (e.g., AI chat log, negotiation transcript, your Hofstede comparison table). The content will be packaged and sent to Google Drive.
