Looking Back at Week 5: Comparative Advantage, Analytic Paths, and the Real Use of Simulation

Core mission: this page does not re-run the prompts. It explains the teaching logic behind them: which wrong intuitions they were designed to correct, which analysis habits they were meant to build, and which international-business judgments they ultimately train.

Prompt THE SPARK|Why Week 7 Returns to the Prompt Book

01|Comparative advantage is often misheard as “who is better”

The first failure is not arithmetic. It is the confusion between production efficiency and post-trade gains. If that distinction is fuzzy, everything that follows—free trade, specialization, supply chains—starts from the wrong base.

02|The textbook path is necessary, but no longer sufficient

Trade policy in 2026 is rarely just about welfare triangles. Subsidies, export controls, countervailing duties, and friend-shoring all mix national security, domestic politics, industry defense, and bargaining leverage. That is why the Game, Emotion, and Value paths were added.

03|Simulation is not creative writing; it is a decision stress test

The role play was never about sounding like a diplomat. It was about thinking from a position: what leverage you hold, where you want the other side to concede, and which part of your own industry gets hurt first. That positional awareness is core to international business.

The prompt book follows a deliberate ladder: first destroy the mercantilist instinct, then correct comparative-advantage logic, then move into new trade theory and political rationality, and only then enter live policy simulation and counter-move design. This was not a pile of prompts; it was a sequenced learning ladder.

COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGE|Making the Concept Clear

In one plain sentence

Comparative advantage is not about who is faster at everything. It is about who gives up less of something else when choosing one activity. The key variable is opportunity cost, not raw productivity or national power.

Absolute Advantage

It asks who uses fewer resources to produce the same thing. It answers a productivity question.

Comparative Advantage

It asks whose sacrifice of B is smaller when producing A. It answers a specialization question.

That is why Prompt 3 asks the question students hate most: if one country is best at everything, why would it still trade? The point is to force a move away from ranking strength and toward relative cost.

The four mistakes students make most often

Mistake 1

Treating absolute advantage as if it were comparative advantage.

Mistake 2

Mixing up production volume and final consumption volume.

Mistake 3

Looking at one good in isolation instead of the whole consumption bundle.

Mistake 4

Forgetting that terms of trade decide whether specialization actually helps.

Why Prompt 7 is intentionally so detailed

Why It Exists
Separate production from final consumption first Many students assume “more output” automatically means “better outcome.” This step separates the factory side from the consumption side.
Comparative advantage needs a common baseline. Without it, students compare different scales and different totals in a meaningless way.
Trade does not guarantee mutual gain by itself; the exchange ratio must fall in a workable range.
If both sides cannot improve clearly, students must explain why This is the crucial move. It forces students to see that comparative advantage does not promise “more of every good,” only better trade possibilities and more efficient allocation.

Using Prompt 7 to make the logic concrete

Under the comparative-advantage scenario, suppose Ghana needs 10 resource units for 1 ton of cocoa and 13.33 for 1 ton of rice, while South Korea needs 40 for cocoa and 20 for rice. Then:

Ghana gives up 0.75 tons of rice to make 1 ton of cocoa; South Korea gives up 2 tons of rice. Ghana has the comparative advantage in cocoa.
Ghana gives up 1.333 tons of cocoa to make 1 ton of rice; South Korea gives up 0.5 tons of cocoa. South Korea has the comparative advantage in rice.

Class note:
Before trade, if both countries split 200 resource units equally, Ghana produces 10 tons of cocoa and 7.5 tons of rice, while South Korea produces 2.5 tons of cocoa and 5 tons of rice.

After specialization: Ghana produces 20 tons of cocoa, South Korea 10 tons of rice.

If the terms of trade are 1 cocoa for 1 rice, and Ghana exports 6 cocoa, Ghana ends with 14 cocoa and 6 rice, while South Korea ends with 6 cocoa and 4 rice.

The point is not “more of both goods.” The point is that each country can reach a more attractive consumption bundle than before.

MISAENG × COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGE

EP4 was used to pull comparative advantage down from the country level to the organizational level. The field and the office are not rivals asking who matters more; they are complementary functions with different costs and different strengths.

Put plainly: comparative advantage is not a command for everyone to chase the most glamorous task; it is a logic for placing people where the system gains the most from their relative fit.
Prompt 4 deliberately questions specialization so students do not mishear comparative advantage as “go all-in.”
Prompt 8 requires a PPF and infographic because pictures expose marginal trade-offs more clearly than slogans do.
That is also why Week 7 adds this correction: comparative advantage guides specialization, but it does not cancel resilience or risk management.

PATH SELECTION|Why the Textbook Route Is Not Enough

If students rely only on the classical trade-policy frame, they tend to say only one thing: tariffs are bad, subsidies distort, export controls are inefficient. Part of that is true, but the frame is too flat for the actual sequence of modern state decision-making.

Four paths, four different questions

TRADE TRIANGLE

Price, quantity, and welfare accounting.

GAME PATH

Where do we force a concession?

EMOTION PATH

How is the policy sold domestically?

VALUE PATH

What is the long-run bill?

> The textbook route is best for one question: how a tariff changes prices, consumption, output, and total welfare. It is indispensable because it reminds students that policy has measurable costs. But it usually assumes stable rules, aggregate-efficiency goals, and a non-central role for politics.

Why Week 5 needed the 3-path extension

Game path adds the pressure point: is a tariff meant to force lower prices, offshore production, technology transfer, or a negotiating concession?

Emotion path adds narrative packaging: the same policy may be sold not as efficiency, but as fairness, sovereignty, jobs, anti-dumping, or anti-dependence.

Value path adds the long-run ledger: a policy may look good in the short run but later raise consumer costs, slow innovation, or reduce supply-chain flexibility.

Key addition: the 3-path model does not overthrow the textbook; it reorders it inside real-world decision flow. In practice, actors often start with a game objective, wrap it with emotion, and only later settle the bill through value.

The 2026 reality: why this is not abstract theory

EU vs. Chinese EVs

The EU put definitive countervailing duties on Chinese BEVs in 2024 and was still adjusting the undertaking mechanism in 2026. That is not a pure efficiency question; it is industry defense, bargaining leverage, and political signaling at the same time.

AI-related trade is still expanding

WTO data for 2026 show AI-enabling goods up 21.9% in 2025, with many key goods exempt from most new tariffs. Today’s world is not blanket decoupling; it is selective decoupling.

Even national-security tools have costs

The IMF explicitly warned in 2026 that tariffs and export controls used for national-security reasons should be narrowly targeted to limit spillovers. That is the language of the Value path.

SIMULATION|What the Simulation Was Actually Training

(a) 核心訓練目標 (a) Core meaning

The goal was never to guess the teacher’s preferred answer or to perform a hardline posture. The real test is this: when your position changes, does your reasoning change with it? Playing the U.S., EU, China, or ASEAN means changing cost structures, domestic pressures, industrial anxieties, and policy toolkits—not just changing the flag.

Turning simulation into a statement of stance instead of a balance of tools and costs.
Writing the opponent as if they were naive, which removes any meaningful stress test.
Stopping at first-order effects and ignoring second- and third-order consequences.
Pasting AI output directly without verification, revision, or challenge.

(c) 實務決策啟發 (c) What students should take away

A policy move usually works on three layers at once: price effects, power effects, and narrative effects. Strong analysis is not limited to “efficient” or “inefficient.” It explains who gets hurt first, who can endure longer, and who can frame the story as legitimate.

Why this matters for international business management

Location choice

Site choice now includes subsidy conditions, export controls, customs exposure, and alliance politics—not just wages and logistics.

Supply-chain governance

(Visibility)。 The cheapest option is no longer automatically the safest. Firms need redundancy, dual sourcing, compliance, and node visibility.

(GR) Government relations

International firms do not speak only to markets anymore; they also speak to regulators, legislatures, media, and local society.

Managerial capability

The scarce managerial skill is the ability to read the economic, political, and narrative ledgers together.

PROMPT MAP|What Each Cluster Was Supposed to Teach

PROMPTS 1–2

Remove the old instinct first: trade is not just buy low, sell high

This cluster teaches that trade never operates in a vacuum. It is shaped from the start by state interests, rules, money, and security logic. Mercantilism appears first so students can see that using trade as a power instrument is not a new habit at all.

PROMPTS 3–4

Turn comparative advantage from slogan into defensible logic

This cluster forces students to think in opportunity-cost terms while also seeing that specialization is not a fairy tale. Prompt 4 matters because it drags in employment frictions, transition risk, industrial concentration, and resilience—so comparative advantage is not misread as “the market will handle everything.”

PROMPTS 5–6

Move from free trade into strategic sectors and political rationality

The point is not to reject comparative advantage but to add a condition: when sectors involve scale economies, first-mover advantages, and national security, states stop looking only at static efficiency. That is why Prompt 5 and Prompt 6 are paired—new trade theory first, then de-risking and export controls.

PROMPTS 7–8

Force abstraction to land: calculate it, visualize it, teach it

This is not busywork. It is concept translation. If a student really understands comparative advantage, the student should be able to compute it, draw it, and explain it to a high-school student. If not, the concept is still stuck at the memorization stage.

PROMPTS 9–12

Send theory into conflict: from diagnosis to counter-move

The final cluster throws all prior theory into a live-moving setting. Students do not just summarize policy. They diagnose where the opponent wants concessions, how the story is sold at home, how long-run supply-chain costs shift, and then design both minimum-cost and hardline responses.

THE BIG PICTURE

From Prompt to Serve: training executable judgment

The full design is not about turning students into prompt operators. It is about teaching them to compress theory, numbers, narratives, and role constraints into a judgment that can actually be used. That matters in international business because firms do not need the most elegant memo; they need a plan that is executable, communicable, and resilient under counterattack.

2026 REALITY CHECK|Why IB Students Must Understand This Now

The current international-business field is no longer globalization 1.0. Firms still want efficiency gains from global specialization, but they also have to live with industrial policy, technology controls, subsidy races, and geopolitical segmentation. That is why the Week 5 prompt book intentionally moved from comparative advantage to trade-war simulation: managers now have to speak both languages at once.

Put bluntly: if you can only recite free trade, you will miss reality; if you can only shout national security, you will miss the bill. This course is designed to close that gap.
